Default Consequences and effects of WAR on the environment!

I wonder how many people that partake in war actually stop to think about the impact on the environment? We have been lucky to not experience actual attacks here in the US other then the occassional terrorist attack. But even those like the Twin Towers attack have shown how devastating they can be. The debri and contaminants spread through the air and into people's lungs. It caused wide spread problems.

But what about the places that are full blown war zones? Constant bombing must be destroying the face of the earth! The smoke, chemicals, and earth blown up into the air must be damaging to the atmosphere. I am sure the wild life is paying the price as well.

So just how much damage is being done currently and how bad is it? How will this effect locations that are not in the war zones? We all know that what happens in one area of the world can greatly effect other areas of the world. Have any studies been done regarding war and environmental damage?
