I currently foster dogs and cats from the Capital Area Humane Society here in Columbus, Ohio. They are always in need of people willing to open up their home and help prepare animals for adoption. I wanted to share my experiences with fostering so I decided to start this thread. I will try to include stories and photos about each foster.
If anyone else is fostering pets for a Humane Society or Shelter, share your stories here! I foster for the Capital Area Humane Society in Hillaird, Ohio http://www.cahs-pets.org

We got Disco & Phoenix when they were tiny babies, too young to be adopted. They were still so little that they were eating mush puppy food. I would have to put it in their mouths with my fingers and they would try to suckle my finger. Or I would lay them on a plate with the mush and they would just make a mess everywhere. They were too little to eat out of bowls. I'm not sure what happened to their mom.
When they were old enough, we returned Phoenix to the Humane Society, but kept Disco. We fell in love with them and debated for a long time about keeping them both, but decided both of them would be too much for us at the time. This is me, Phoenix (left), and Disco (right). ![]() This is Disco now... ![]() |

I fostered Shadow from the Humane Society because he had to go through heart worm treatment. Heartworm treatment is tough on animals and a lot of them don't survive. This guy was strong though and made it through it. He was afraid of getting into vehicles so I had to drag him into the car to get him back to the Human Society when he was all better. Poor guy. He was a sweet baby though.

I fostered Silas because she had Mange, a bad skin infection. She had the non-contagious type though. She had to be on medication for a while before she could go back to the Humane Society for adoption. She was a Great Dane mix puppy.
Silas & Disco... best buddies. |

I actually found these little babies under the front porch of our new home. A stray cat had them under there. Of course, I didn't want to leave them under the porch for a couple of reasons. The first being that they were all very sick and would surely die under there. The second being that we need to control cat over population and those 6 kittens would lead to a huge boom in our neighborhood stray cat population.
My porch was enclosed around the bottom so I had to dig trenches to get them out. Their poor little eyes were all gooed shut from eye infections, so when they heard me scratching around under there, they thought I was their mom and came right to me. When I got them out, I had to use warm compresses to clean and open their eyes and noses. It took a long time to clear up their eyes. I got medicated eye drops and antibiotic edible drops to treat them. I also used something called "Little Noses" to soothe their sinuses. It took a long time and they had a recurrence, but they finally got well and I was able to take them to the humane society to be adobted. I'm so glad too because I wasn't sure if they would live through the illness. This is Winston. He was the sickest and the runt of the litter. ![]() ![]() Still sick... but looking better... ![]() This is Kibbington... ![]() Winston and Disco... ![]() Healthy & happy kitty! Ready for humane society and a new home... ![]()

I fostered this litter of 3 puppies for the humane society. They were too young to go out on the adoption floor and also needed some medication for upper respiratory infections.
