You know, I do feel bad that people's lives would be so terrible that they would risk them just to make it into our country. Or that they would go through all the trouble of getting here, spending what little money they might have, just to get deported.
I think that the way this whole situation is being handled is wrong on so many levels. I think it's terrible that we have to turn away desparate people who are just trying to survive. People that will probably work harder then most American's to get by and are more then willing to do that because they came from having absolutely nothing. But I also do not think that it's ok for them to come here and get free hand outs and special benefits, when American's need that help. We are still struggling with unemployment, terrible health care, a wounded economy, etc. If anyone in the US is giving hand-outs.... it should be to the American people who struggle on a daily basis to survive. It's also ludacris to me that so many people are working here illegally in the US and not paying taxes. Let me tell you, I have to pay taxes, I hate them, and I especially hate the IRS. But I can't get away with not paying them. I struggle to get by probably more so then a lot of illegals and yet, I have to pay large amounts of taxes. You might say, well they aren't supposed to be working here illegally... there are laws in place for that. So tell me this... why is it that I have seen officers flat out know that a person is illegal, they admitted to it (seen it with my own two eyes), and because they are not "looking for illegal aliens" at that time, they let them go??? I have seen this happen on more then one occassion and it's infuriating. American's need the jobs, we need the money that illegal aliens are earning TAX FREE, our economy needs it. I think that if the situation was handled differently, this wouldn't be such a problem. If people want to move to our country to work and be successful, then that is ok under certain conditions. They cannot take "under the table" jobs where they pay no taxes. They must pay into Social Security. They must accept wages that are equal to what an American would require for that line of work (no undercutting the American's for jobs by taking less pay and thus increasing American unemployment). They must learn to speak English as that is our primary language and we need to be able to understand them. They came here... so why should we have to learn their language? They must learn our laws and abide by them regardless of their beliefs or religion. They must get an American education. And lastly, they should not get any special benefits for being from another country that our American's in need cannot get. All in all, if immigrants did what they needed to in order to keep the playing ground level with the American citizens, it wouldn't be so bad. I truly believe that they could contribute to the health of our economy, create new businesses, build a stronger work force, and expand the American way. But if it's always going to be the way it is now, then nothing will ever change and immigrants will never be openly accepted into the US. Side note: I realize that many immigrants are good people and do all of the things I suggested. They really try to fit in and do right by America. This is not directed at all immigrants, but more the general overall situation and what I see happening on a regular basis.
