Default Variances of laws across the US

This is something I have had a problem with for a long time. In the US, we preach about being fair and just. How everyone has equal rights. I have to disagree with this.

Why is it that each state makes up their own laws that often times differ greatly from other states? I saw on tv yesterday where a guy speeding on his motorcycle hit another vehicle and destroyed the back of it. The judge said, "The bad thing is that this state does not require motorcycle drivers to carry insurance." What?? Really?? So in one state, you have to have it... and in another, you don't.

Or how about how the consequences for dealing drugs is different in one state then the other?

Or how about how some states have conjugal visits for prisoners and other states won't even let a married couple sit next to each other??

In Kentucky smoking in public places is still legal. In Ohio, you get a ticket and so does the establishment that let you smoke.

In Nevada, prostitution is legal. In Ohio, you go to prison.

This pretty much tells me that before you decide where you want to live for the rest of your life, you should check up on all the laws in that state and make sure they suite your needs.

The laws in the US are not fair, they are not equal. I get so angry when a rapist in one state only gets a year in prison and a rapist in another state gets 10 years. Am I the only one who sees how this is not right?

I know a lot of people think that the states should be able to govern their own, but I think it's wrong. A lot of unfairness is playing out and I don't agree with it.
