Has anyone seen either the movie "Blood Diamonds" with Leonardo DiCaprio or a real documentary about "Blood" diamonds? I saw the movie and then a documentary about them. It left me utterly and completely disturbed. I had no idea that sort of thing went on. It makes sense that it would happen, but I just couldn't believe it.
For anyone who does not know what I am talking about, "Blood Diamonds" are diamonds that were mined and processed in locations that were essentially war zones, where people were forced to work as slaves to obtain them, and people were brutally tortured and murdered over them. These are the diamonds that are likely to be in any of your slightly older jewelry. I couldn't even come close to describing the horrors that the diamond industry created. Needless to say, everyone should know about this and what lengths human beings will go to for wealth and power. It left me with a disgusted feeling. I look at my wedding ring and wonder where the diamonds came from and if they're tainted with someone's misery. It makes me feel like I don't want to own any diamonds at all. It's like the same feeling I get when I think about wearing a fur coat. What poor soul suffered so I could have that for the sake of vanity?

I really love that movie! It makes me so sad. I watched it a few days before I began living in Africa for a while. Man, it was powerful! That being said, I also love my diamond! Being away from that environment makes me forget about certain conflicts sometimes. It's so hard to live life in America (or other privileged countries) without using some resource that has been fought over. I'm glad you're kept everything in perspective and at least reminding us what has happened so we can enjoy our lively diamonds. Conflict or not. I LOVE MINE!
